Vanitas is a term applied to a kind of still life painting common in the 17th century. By depicting objects of everyday life they were seeking to celebrate, the simple things in life.
In making this work artist Mike Golding was concerned with exploring the everyday experience of ordinary people as well as that of Ashington as a town.
By adopting the look of "Old Master" paintings achieved through lighting, it was his intention that viewers would think the images represented an idea of the past. However as they noticed the objects portrayed in the image, they would recognise that many of these were associated with modern life.
Mike was also interested in reflecting upon ideas of masculinity and feminity using objects from the businesses and sourced objects which he felt reflected the spirit of the street.
